I did Triometrics yesterday morning then cycled to jiu-jitsu. I feel it today because there were more people attending the day session than is usual. I got to spar with some other brown belts who have more time in than me, which was great, because it means I get beaten up which exposes my weaknesses. I've been fretting for a while since I only really get to spar with white and blue belts. It doesn't challenge me as much as a brown or black belt does. I constantly envy the blue belts who I train with because they have a huge pool of people who are better than them so they are improving all the time whereas I felt that I've been in a rut.
I sparred as much as I could yesterday. BJJ is not easy, especially in your 40s. I'm bruised and aching all over today. It's tough doing BJJ while doing P90X and also counting calories so I am at least 500 calories under required. I love it though. I feel like a gladiator getting my body ready. There are also so many things to work on, I constantly watch the videos I make of rolling and make notes and stuff I need to fix. It's like being in a laboratory.
I finished the session by sparring for 10 mins Nogi with Kameda-san, who constantly beat the crap out of me and tapped me more times that I can remember. He is a good training partner in that he is around the same weight as me and rolls without ego. Both happy to be offensive and work defensively. He also has different techniques I'm not used to going against that most folks don't do at our club. Those 10 minutes of rolling at the end go fast but the last 2 are exhausting.
My weight has dropped some, I'm around 73.6 right now. Down from just over 75 kg 2 months ago. It's not a huge drop but even when counting calories I find my weight yo-yos around from day to day.
My personal blog about training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Japan plus stuff about diet and keeping fit and healthy.

On the Mat Day 827: 50/50 Guard and P90X Week7 Complete
I'm still chugging along at P90X while doing BJJ. My stats this week hadn't really changed at the time of recording them. I was still 74 kg and 83 cm waist. Although, just today, after training I weighed myself and was at 72.6 kg. I couldn't believe it so had to weight myself again. I must have dropped a lot of water during today's training at the club.
I'm basically calculating all my calories on Fitday and it seems to be slowly and steadily working to drop my weight. My greatest consumption comes from fats in the form of avocado, macadamia nuts, walnuts, chia seeds, cream, cheese, MCT oil and eggs. My mood and energy is constant and I have even found that I think more clearly while sparring. Just today I saw a counter to a position I've never seen before. It felt like I was taking a back-seat and just pointing myself in the correct direction to get around what my opponent was doing.
Just the other night I watched That Sugar Film on Netflix. Wow, what a great movie, funny and informative like only an Australian could do. It really hit home how much crap the food industry tries to sell us without giving a shit about us. It added fuel to the fire for me to eat healthy. I try to only eat stuff in its natural form, this is not always easy, but I feel it is paying off both in my health and while doing BJJ.
I've also registered for the Dumau competition on May 7th. To get ready for it I've been adding 10 mins of nogi sparring at the end of each session with whoever will roll with me. I need to build up my gas tank.
I'm currently doing lots with the 50/50 guard. Just deconstructing leglocks, sweeps and how to get out of the damn thing. Does it look like 2 dogs having sex? Sort of but it really has opened up my game into other areas. I'm also right now digesting a 50/50 guard DVD loaned to me by Yoshida-san and made by Felipe Pena. It's achingly slow to get through and can at times make me go to sleep, but it has a lot of good stuff in there to pluck out.

P90X Week 6 Complete
I've just started on the 7th week of P90X. A week ago I felt drained of energy and a friend recommended that I try using Glutamine. I've used it in the past but haven't bought it for many years. I took about 5g and it seemed to help a bit. Either that or the warmer weather has made it getting up easier in the morning.
When doing P90X every day and also training BJJ (I trained 4 times last week) which is a high volume for me, there seems to come a point where you either stop doing the workout or push through and it starts to get better. I decided to push through because I want some good results and am getting ready to compete again in BJJ.
My stats this morning were:
April 10, 2017: 155/96 BP, 51 BPM, 83 cm waist, 74 kg
Compared with the start:
February 27, 2017: 143/79 BP, 50 BPM, 87 cm waist, 75.6 kg
Things seem to be getting better (except for blood pressure) so I'm doing something right. I've decided to use Fitday.com to calculate calories at a deficit of 500 a day, which is 3500 a week and equals under half a kilo of weight (hopefully fat). I'm trying to approach the diet part more scientifically now that I'm accustomed to eating higher fat and less carbohydrate. It might get tough.

On the Mat Day 818: Leglocks
So I am still working on leglocks. Today during sparring all I concentrated on was putting everyone into 50/50 guard and working leglocks from there. So far, there appears to be around 6 leglocks that I have discovered. It's a lot of fun working this out.
It was warm enough to spar nogi today so I sparred a round with James then K-sensei. Lots of fun. Still feeling tired out from P90X so I switched Plyometrics for Triometrics from P90X3. It's half as short but still hard on the legs. I'm still doing the full weight-training workouts but also replaced Yoga and Kenpo X with yoga workouts of 30 mins (from various sources) and MMX (P90X3) respectively.
I feel tighter all over my body but it is a struggle to train BJJ 3x a week and do P90X. I bought some multi-vitamins and have even been taking naps when I feel really beaten up.

On the Mat Day 817: Drilling Leglocks / P90X Week 4 Complete
I've always liked leglocks and there is a lot of information out there about them plus they are very much in vogue right now. As a blue belt I used to go for straight ankle locks a lot. I've recently been studying all the terminology for the positions such as ashi garami, honey hole, saddle, etc. It's quite confusing because different people use different names. I think the garami and sankaku terminology that John Danaher uses is confusing. I think once I get all the positions clear in my head I will list them here with terminology that is out there but is clearly distinct for easy remembrance.
Today, I basically drilled the single leg X sweep and low single to enter into ashi garami. I also tried the Imanari Roll to see if I could do it and was pleasantly surprised that I have the dexterity to do it. I sparred with Yoshida-san no-gi for about 20 minutes non-stop almost today. Was a great roll and lots of fun. It's like dancing with a familiar partner who is dangerous yet careful about my safety.
Ogiyama-san also wanted to spar with me no-gi today and that was also fun. We go way back years now but it still seems like the other day he walked into the gym for the first time. Time flies when you do BJJ. He has recently split from his wife and he whispered to me that he recently got a couple of tattoos (they are sort of taboo in Japan). I took a look and thought it was cool that he got them done. Sure it might be a mid-life crisis he is going through but at least he is doing it in a positive manner.
I just finished the recovery week of P90X. It was very much not sticking to the schedule. I did a couple of workouts but also stretching and was going to train BJJ but was hit with a cold that kept me away from training. My diet has not been good at all. Eating too many carbs. After 3 weeks of P90X mixed with BJJ my body felt exhausted. I will still get on with it tomorrow. The workouts get harder but I like how it builds my stamina.

P90X Week 3 Complete
So I am finally into recovery week. It is very much needed. I feel extremely tired getting up early and working out while also doing BJJ 3 times a week. I do like the fact that I have more energy when I roll though.
I've just finished a 3 day holiday and although I didn't eat the way I wanted to. My carb intake definitely went up and also I ate more sugar than I wanted to. I think my body was telling me it needed more energy - not sure really. Anyway I got back onto eating well again this morning with a huge omelette then a chicken and avocado salad for lunch.
Unfortunately my body stats don't seem to have changed much.
Stats:
February 27, 2017: 143/79 BP, 50 BPM, 87 cm waist, 75.6 kg
March 6, 2017: 144/79 BP, 51 BPM, 86 cm waist, 75 kg
March 13, 2017: 148/80 BP, 47 BPM, 84.5 cm waist, 74.8 kg
March 20, 2017: 128/75 BP, 48 BPM, 83 cm waist, 75 kg
So I gained a little weight but my waist shrunk. Perhaps I didn't measure it properly. After all I am right out of bed and doing this bleary-eyed. All I can do is keep going and maybe tweak some things in my eating.
One thing is, it does give me more confidence when I roll at BJJ because of the mental advantage in knowing I am working my ass off every morning while many of the guys I roll against probably aren't.

P90X Week 2 Complete
I feel like my body is always sore but has tightened up in so many places. My arms, chest, sides and hamstrings feel more solid. I can do more push ups and pull ups now and I can go further with Plyometrics.
It's getting a little hard to start Plyo and Ab Ripper because they are probably the most painful workouts for me. I find Ab Ripper to be quite boring and in general, as with all the workouts, to be overly long. I still get up at 7.10 am, put my mats down on the floor, shift my chair out of the room and get to it. By the time the weekend arrives, though, I am extremely tired and require a 9 hour sleep to recover. I would probably benefit from taking a nap in the daytime. Although this may mess up my sleep pattern. Right now I sleep somewhere between 10 and 11 pm so I can be fully rested for a workout.
My diet is going OK. I write everything down in a notebook to keep myself honest. I don't write macro nutrients like Carbs, Protein and Fats but simply have been trying to stop eating so many carbs and sugary foods. Below are some examples of what I eat. Lots of green and a good chunk of meat. Carbs mostly come from sweet potatoes and rice, with very little bread. Fats are mostly avocado, walnuts, macadamia, MCT oil, coconut oil, olives, eggs, butter and cream.
Stats:
February 27, 2017: 143/79 BP, 50 BPM, 87 cm waist, 75.6 kg

March 13, 2017: 148/80 BP, 47 BPM, 84.5 cm waist, 74.8 kg
I was a little worried because my blood pressure was high but it only seems to happen in the morning. I checked myself in the afternoon and it was normal. My weight has not gone down much (200 g) but my waist is getting thinner. I think I am snacking on too many nuts. They are so calorie dense.

P90X Week 1 Complete
It's been over 5 years since I did P90X. The last time I did it, I was waking up at 5.30 in the morning before work to sweat through it and get fit. Now that I work at home I wake up much later at 7.10 am on the dot and get to training.
I've been meaning to start P90X for some time. I would have liked to start back in January or February but it is far too cold but just before March, the weather here warms up enough to make it comfortable to train free of worrying about pulling a hamstring or calf muscle due to the cold - I have to worry about such things now I am almost 45. I'm nearly the same age as Tony Horton when he first made P90X. Weird that since I bought it way back when it first came out and I was at the time 30 years old. Wow!
I can't put it any other way. The first week of P90X was hell. Even though I've been training BJJ for years 3 times a week and thought I was fairly fit. I wasn't. I could slowly feel my cardio going down hill so that I could not think fast enough to move to the next technique while sparring. I was too gassed. This is why I've decided to go through P90X hell again. Cardio is king.
I just finished Plyometrics today. It actually was easier than last week. I couldn't keep up most of the time but I also did better than I thought. Last week my entire body was aching, especially my chest and by Sunday night I thought I was ill because my bones (that's what it felt like) were aching. However, I've been sleeping for 8 hours most nights and it is amazing how fast the body can recover after a good night's sleep.
I've also cleaned up my diet a lot. Low carbs. Very low carbs. I've been trying to stick to the Primal Blueprint, which I've had success with last year during a 2 month stint. Basically I am eating a lot of good fat; avocado, walnuts, macadamia, MCT oil, coconut oil, eggs and have reduced sugar in my diet a lot. I feel like my body is running on better fuel. Hopefully everything is coming together and this time around I am concentrating on diet more than the workout to get me fit and in shape. Afterall, diet is 70% the workout is 30% or so I am told.
Stats:
February 27, 2017: 143/79 BP, 50 BPM, 87 cm waist, 75.6 kg
March 6, 2017: 144/79 BP, 51 BPM, 86 cm, 75 kg

On The Mat Day 790: First Day on the Mats in 2017
Really cold and dark this morning getting up at 7 am. I almost didn't make it. My brain was telling me to stay in the nice warm futon. I got up eventually and changed into my thermal rashguard and leggings then got in the car and went.
I went over butterfly guard with some x-guard partnering with Yoshida-san. I've been working on this guard for a while. I picked up some interesting things from what he drills. I never really thought about it, but it is possible to belt drag, pant drag in addition to lapel drag and arm drag. I never really use the belt to control the opponent but I might try it in future. Having a four finger grip in the belt palm facing out with the elbow locked against the opponent's is particularly strong and allows me the ability to drag them with it to take the back.
Despite only drilling today I still felt stiff in the neck. To be honest, I'm quite sick of living with the pain. I used a tennis ball to take some of the stiffness out of it tonight and it feels a little better. I wish it would go back to the way it was but don't ever expect it to.
I've been preparing to start P90X again stating February. Why not now you ask? Well I've never had good progress starting in January. In the past I've had muscles lock up due to the cold, etc., so will wait until February and go through it. At the moment I'm just collecting my files together and have ordered a smart TV for my room so I can work out to a big screen. Gone have the days of doing workouts along with my tiny tablet. I'm looking forward to getting back in shape and will probably try to use the Primal Diet with P90X. Should be fun.

Power 90X Review
The Good
- The workouts are all very different so it doesn't get boring.
- You will build both strength and endurance.
- Uses many body weight exercises such as push ups and pull ups, which are good for grappling sports.
- Plyometrics is really tough and will get you into shape.
- Allows you to use lots of tools such as dumbells, barbells, pull up bars, and has alternate exercises for bands too.
- Cues for exercises are usually good.
- Music has been selected appropriately for the type of workout. Slow relaxing for yoga and stretch, fast and rough for hard cardio or weight workouts.
- High production value and cool looking workout studio.
- Some of the workout buddies are quite interesting.
- Time display and exercise display is clear.
- Workout length is long at 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 mins for Yoga.
- Could have possibly done with more variety for AbRipper X with a 2nd ab routine video. Possibly if you have P90X+ you have access to this so a minor problem.
- Tony Horton's jokes tend to get old and grating.
- Too much Dreya worship.
- Complicated diet plan split into macro-nutrient blocks.
- Small cut and splice in one of the weight workouts during bicep curls. Very minor but annoying.
Above all else, P90X will get you into shape for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I had more energy while rolling and could hold chokes for longer. I took creatine for the whole 90 days, using it only on the weight training days, so that might explain why I could hold my muscles in an isometric position for much longer. At the end of it I could feel my arms were fuller, especially the triceps and also the area around my chest felt much stronger. My quadriceps and hamstrings also felt harder than before and they could push much harder and felt stronger when doing tackles or triangle chokes. As a measurement to how strong I got, during the first week I could only do 8 reverse grip pull ups from fresh but this doubled to 16 by the end. My wide front pull ups also doubled. I really felt this pulling power helped during jiu-jitsu to pull the opponent using his kimono.
The Workouts
They're all around 1 hour long with Yoga X being the exception at 1 hour 30 minutes. I did set out to do Yoga X but found it tediously long so switched to the One-on-One yoga videos that Tony made, which are the one with the hummingbird and fountain of youth yoga. The hardest workout is probably Plyometrics but you get used to it but at the same time it never gets easy. The easiest is KenpoX, which I consider to be a junk workout so replaced it with other things such as Cardio X or yoga during the last months when I was overtrained. There are some really good muscle developing workouts among the P90X DVDs but the best has to be Chest & Back because I felt so pumped afterwards. Your upper body will feel like it wants to stretch out of your skin at the end of it. Core synergistics is interesting and seems to fly by because you only do it on the recovery phases so the workout is still novel. Legs and Back however is rough because you do it every week and it's working two major body parts. I would have liked an alternative for this as with the upper body.
Overtraining
Just past the second month of P90X I could slowly feel my body start to fall short. I was constantly tired and could not push as hard in the workouts. At this time I was doing BJJ about 3 times a week in addition to P90X so that was a factor. If I had had more self-control I really should have slept much more and eaten better. Towards the last week I developed bursitis in my elbow which is on ice at this very moment. Whether it was due to pushing hard during P90X and also doing BJJ I don't know. All I know is that it starting with a clicking sound in my elbow while doing pull ups.
Diet
As always, I started off really well. Eating lots of greens, fruit, eggs and lean meat like tuna and chicken. This is tough to do over 3 months so there were times I wavered and ate sweet stuff but never greasy fried food. I tried to eat as clean as I could but could not follow the diet because of it's complexity. This is where I always seem to fall short with the Beachbody routines. I prefered the Mitch ladder and simple calorie counting of P90. I plan to do P90X2 soon so will try to tighten up my diet by preparing lots of food on the weekend.
Results
I really started P90X to step up my game in BJJ and I think I achieved that. About half way through this I entered a competition and won my first match since becoming a purple belt against a larger opponent. I've also been doing well against people at my club who give me problems and have received lots of comments about how strong I've become and I look more macho. This has not been apparent to myself but it's nice to hear such positive feedback as it fuels my fire.

Conclusion
P90X is simply a great workout that you can do in the morning and get it over with to give you results 3 months down the line. I would recommend this to anyone who has the persistence to see it to the end. It's not easy though. There are times when I wanted to quit and stay in bed. I will follow this up with P90X2 so stay tuned for that in 3 months from now.

P90X Week 9
So I am into week 9. There are 4 weeks of alternating workout then the last week is a recovery week. Then I plan to move onto P90X2. My eating has not been very good this week. For some reason, when I hit the recovery week I tend to eat badly then when I train during the harder weeks I eat better. It feels like my body is moving down and up gears and demands better food. For the last 2 weeks I have been doing intermittent fasting but have decided to stop because I was incredibly irritable during the day and felt like I was losing strength and stamina while fasting. I just sort of felt like my engine was revving high with no fuel in the tank and something had to give if I didn't make amends.
I did Chest and Back this morning and felt really great. Despite waking up groggy and not feeling like I could push out a single push up, I got through the workout and added a couple of reps to each exercise. I actually felt really strong like my body was just taking over and doing the reps without being connected to my mind which was telling me to stop. It was a really great feeling. I completed the workout and went to look in the mirror. I'm not ripped or anything but I feel and look a hell of a lot stronger than I did at the beginning. I still hate AbRipper X though.

On the Mat Day 474: Sleep - The best medicine
![]() |
| It's more comfortable than it looks |
I probably got around a 10 hour sleep and it was amazing how different I felt after it. My energy was really high and most of my aches and pains had gone away. I like to think that my body had repaired itself with Wolvernine-esque powers in the night because that was what it felt like.
I pushed hard through P90X Back and Biceps then with sweat still on my brow I took off to the dojo. It was drizzling outside so maybe it caused less people to turn up for training but in all there were 5 of us. The other guys were fairly low level so I just let them manhandle me and work on my escapes. It was apparent to me that my back escapes are the worst of the lot. It is really hard to escape an opponent you aren't facing. Other than this I had very little trouble escaping because the guys in the morning leave lots of gaps and make lots of mistakes. I also sparred a couple with K-sensei, even managing to catch him in a knee-bar which I applied with care. If I ever go for any type of leg-lock, my opponent's health is always priority over the tap. He commented that I seemed to be in good form today - Yup that's what 10 hours sleep will do for you! Hopefully I can take this condition with me to the tournament on Sunday.

On the Mat Day 473: Marco Barbosa back in Japan
I'm feeling exhausted right now. I woke up at 6.30 am stayed in bed for about half an hour, fading in and out of sleep, then woke up and did P90X. My chest and arms were really pumped after it but they also felt like lead at Jits training today. I've been seriously thinking about escapes a lot recently and really buckling down and mastering them. I usually go to the club and have in my head that when I spar with white belts and such I will let them pass and then work escapes. The thing is my ego usually gets the better of me and I end up not doing that OR they are so easy to sweep that there is little time to work on my stuff from bottom. Today thought I really bit down and worked hard to put myself in bad positions to escape from. There were even some instances where I swept but didn't come up so could continue working escapes. Sunday's 2 hour drill sessions are helping a lot, I wish I had that time from the very beginning. If I ever teach BJJ in the future I will have at least a loose curriculum starting with escapes for the first few months.
Marco Barbosa arrived in Japan last week and held a seminar on the 21st. I couldn't go due to work but will attend his tournament here. I think this year they are planning to keep it small in numbers because the last one went on for quite a while and everyone seemed exhausted. I'm certainly feeling stronger and my cardio is much better due to doing P90X. I'm at around day 33 right now so it will be interesting to see if this new found strength and energy will help me do well finally at purple belt.

P90X Week 4 Done
Things have been up and down lately. The months at the end of the financial year are busy for me right now plus I caught a cold. I still kept working at p90X though. I took 1 day off it and made it up on the rest day instead. I've not been able to get to training BJJ as much as I wanted but now the weather is warming up I feel my mood lift and hope to train more from now.
I went to the early morning 7 am drilling session yesterday. There was only 3 of us there including me, I hate odd numbers because it made us rotate which means I get less practice time. For that reason, I didn't really get to do as much as I would have liked. Last weeks tech was Darce chokes and this week we are doing knee on the belly. F-sensei showed KOB to mount and then to rear mount when the opponent turns. It was fun and should make some good drills.
I really didn't feel like training today, lots of DIY on the weekend lowered my immune system and I had an attack of the dreaded cold sores. I still went and trained. I asked a doctor I train with and he said its find to roll with them since probably everyone has the virus in their body anyway. I'm just one of the unlucky ones that shows symptoms.
Doing the P90X weights workout from 7 am then going to Jits at 11 am really knackered me out. I will take some ZMA tonight and hopefully get a super fantastic sleep for Plyometrics tomorrow morning.

P90X Week 2
Work has been busy this week so I didn't get much time besides Monday and Sunday (today) to train jiu-jitsu but I kept pushing play with P90X. The muscle ache that was almost chronic from the first week has disappeared and I feel much stronger. I added a few reps to my score sheets so was very happy about that. During Legs and Back I also felt that my legs have a bit more endurance and today when doing BJJ drills for leg drag passes my legs did not feel tired at all. P90X is slowly starting to whip me in shape.
I've been trying to eat better. It's never easy but I work on it and realize it is just as if not more important than the exercise portion on this schedule. I've been eating a lot of eggs and fish. Bought some almond milk and soya milk too. I've also been eating a lot of vegetables and apples. I could eat more I know. I wish I could cut out sugar from my diet entirely but I get cravings for cookies some times during the week and weaken especially when I have a lot of translation work to get through. I've also started drinking green tea and plan to replace my coffee intake with it.
Here are some pics of what I've been eating.

P90X Week 1
I've been feeling like I need to get in shape for some time now. Christmas made me eat a lot of bad food and put on about 2 kg in weight so I needed to do something. That's where P90X comes in.
I got through the 1st week and it wasn't easy - oh no. Chest and Back gave me incredibly painful pectoral pain that lasted about 3 days, then Plyometrics and Legs and Back made my legs feel like jelly. I noticed when drilling leg drag passes last week that my legs tired quickly so hopefully these workouts will remedy that. I have lost a lot of muscular endurance over the years. I don't know whether this is through lack of weightraining or simply aging but I seemed much better when I first did P90X when I was in my 30s.
I also did the entire 1 hour 30 mins of Yoga and you know what, it felt really good and I enjoyed it. It was a much needed recovery. I also did KenpoX, how I hate that workout. Not because it's hard but because it feels so fake to me. That should have been either a boxing workout or a jiu-jitsu workout.
I also trained 3 times this week. Friday night was hard because I was exhausted and sparred with a guy who has just started but looks like a sumo wrestler weighing in at I'd say easily over 100 kg. God damn he was heavy but I surprised myself by triangling him - even with my short-ass legs!

P90X Day 31: Chest, Shoulders and Triceps
Not so happy with my performance during this workout. I know in the past I've been able to do much more but I don't have the strength in my arms I used to have. Perhaps it's age or just that I haven't picked up a weight seriously for the time I've been doing BJJ. Most likely the latter. Still a good workout judging from the shakes in my arms at the end. Phew.

P90X Day 27: 30 mins well spent
Everytime I do Yoga that is what I think. My body feels great afterwards, all the kinks, all the knots taken out. Last night I also did Core Synergistics. Out of all the P90X routines I think this one is the most beneficial to BJJ. Lots of core work and balance. The Plank to Chatarunga Runs are great for simulating core strength and building endurace for double or single leg takedowns and sprawls.

P90X Day 23: Stretching
Yesterday Yoga and today stretching. I am in the rest week now so am just trying to get my body healed and ready for the following weeks. I forget how good a long hour of stretching can be. Enjoyed it a lot.

P90X Day 19: Shoulders and Arms
I did not sleep so well this week. About 6.5 hours a day of sleep. That is not good for me. It has mostly been due to the crisis Japan is facing where I stay up late and watch the news for information. Because of this I haven't had as much energy but still plodding on with the workouts. I increased the weight for some reps tonight and felt good but my right wrist is still tweaky.
